Transfer Stations

Council owns and operates transfer stations in Tokoroa and Putāruru. There is also a recycling drop-off facility in Tīrau.

Fees and charges 2025-26

Tokoroa and Putāruru transfer stations accept cashless payment only. There is no surcharge for Paywave payments using debit/EFTPOS cards. A 1.00% service fee will be applied to credit card payments.

Note:

All fees include the National Waste Levy.
No liquid or hazardous waste permitted.
Greenwaste not accepted. Flax, yukkas, cabbage trees, pampas, gorse trunks must be less than 100mm.
All commercial and industrial waste to Tokoroa Transfer Station only.
Fees may be adjusted if Emissions Trading Scheme costs change.

Free items

The following items can be disposed free of charge at the Tokoroa and Putāruru transfer stations:

Clean recycling: paper, cardboard, newspapers, glass bottles, cans, plastics 1, 2 & 5
Car batteries and smaller household batteries including vape batteries
Gas bottles (not including helium)
Household chemical bottles (clearly labelled)
Household paint and spray cans (full and half-full only)
Household oil (240 L drums are not accepted and need to be taken to your local fuel station or mechanic)
Household appliances and metals: roofing iron, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, microwaves (no glass tray), steel tubing, bikes, trampolines, rims (there is a cost for fridges and freezers - please see fees above)
Old phones & chargers (phone box at the kiosk)
Household batteries (including vapes & rechargeable batteries)
Tokoroa Transfer Station also takes baby car seats (just let the kiosk operator know)
