Refurbished South Waikato Aquatic Centre Opens Its Doors
Hundreds of swimmers and guests from across the District packed out the South Waikato Aquatic Centre on 3 October, as the facility reopened to the public following a 19-month refurbishment project.
Speeches from Mayor Gary Petley, South Waikato born-and bred Black Fern Toka Natua and a selection of long-standing South Waikato pool users kicked the day off, before the community enjoyed free swim sessions throughout the afternoon.
The $17m refurbishment has delivered a range of new features, including a splash pad for children, sauna, plunge pool, upgraded spa facilities, refreshed landscaping and playground areas and improved community spaces, which will be available for hire.
The Tokoroa venue has also been equipped with modern systems and infrastructure to support its long-term sustainability.
Faced with a decision on what to do with the facility ahead of the last Long Term Plan in 2024, Mayor Petley spoke of his pride in seeing the end result, after his Council opted to invest and future proof it for generations to come.
"Pools are such important places for communities like ours. They are meeting spots for friends and whānau, places where activity takes place, where core skills are learned and, perhaps even more importantly, where core memories are created," Mayor Petley said.
"Had we not committed to investing properly in the facility, the reality is that we faced a real risk of losing it altogether.
“Looking at what our District has gained with this wonderful new centre, it is clear that it was the right thing to do for our community."
Formerly known as the South Waikato Indoor Pools, the name has been changed to reflect the wider variety on offer at the new venue.
