Tīrau Watermain Upgrade
An essential upgrade to Tīrau’s ageing water infrastructure, ensuring the town’s water supply is reliable and fit for the future, began on 11 May and is expected to be completed by August 2026.
The project is making good progress, with a ridermain installed along State Highway 1 on 27 May. The next stage of the project involves installing a watermain opposite the ridermain on State Highway 1 and along Bridge Street.
Road closures will be in place while the work is being carried out, with disruptions to residents and visitors minimised as much as possible. Largely taking place along State Highway 1, all homes and businesses will be accessible, with mobility-friendly pathways constructed in some places to ensure access.
Why are we upgrading Tirau's water infrastructure?
We are upgrading ageing water pipes to improve the reliability of Tīrau’s water supply and reduce the risk of leaks and outages in the future. In 2025 an exercise revealed that Tīrau was losing 50% of the water produced through leaks in the pipes that were approaching 100 years old. The work is part of the Water Renewals Programme outlined in the Long Term Plan 2024-2034.

Will local businesses remain open?
Yes, businesses will remain open. Please continue to support local shops and services during construction.
How long will the work take?
Work is scheduled from 11 May through to late August 2026, weather and ground conditions permitting.
Will I still be able to access my property?
Yes, resident and business access will be maintained throughout.
Will footpaths remain open?
Some footpaths will be temporarily closed while work is underway. Safe alternative routes will be clearly signposted, and these will be accessible for those with mobility issues too.
Will the work be noisy?
At times, yes, there will be noise from machinery and construction activity, particularly during working hours (7am–6pm weekdays).
Will my water supply be affected?
Water outages may occur during the final connection (cutover) of the new watermain to the existing network. These shutdowns are planned to minimise disruption, and South Waikato District Council will provide at least 48 hours’ notice to affected residents and businesses before any scheduled water supply interruption.
Will rubbish and recycling still be collected?
Yes, all collections will continue as normal.
Is it safe to walk through the area?
Yes, but please follow all signage and instructions from traffic management staff. They are there to keep everyone safe.
Will parking be affected?
Yes, on-street parking will be restricted near active work zones to allow crews to safely complete the work, so please allow extra time to find a park and be prepared to have to park a little further away than usual.
Will there be work at night or weekends?
Work is planned only for weekdays during daytime hours. Any exceptions will be communicated in advance.
