​Council returns management of Arapuni Hall to Mercury

South Waikato District Council has returned responsibility for the Arapuni Hall to owners Mercury, as part of its facility rationalisation work signaled in the Long Term Plan 2024-34.

Council had previously leased the hall from Mercury for a nominal fee, under the arrangement that it had to pay for maintenance of the building.

Given the ongoing costs would fall on the general ratepayer, and the fact that the Council-managed Puketurua Hall is located only 3.7km away, Council has opted to hand the running of the hall back to Mercury.

There were no extra costs associated with exiting the lease for the Council.

Mercury is now looking after maintenance of the building, as well as maintenance of the fields between the hall and the tennis courts/bowling club.
