Progress Update: South Waikato Indoor Pools

There has been a lot of progress since the last update at the South Waikato Indoor Pools.

The changing area is taking shape with the lighting starting to go up. We have begun installing shower units and bench seating. There will also be five large new changing rooms that are suitable for families.

The new HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) units are being installed in the changing area and the community rooms, as well as in the main pool hall. The main plant room is just about completed. The installation of the acoustic ceiling in the pool hall will begin soon.

A Deep Dive on the Terminology

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. It's a mechanical system that controls the flow and quality of air, the indoor temperature and humidity in buildings.

A Plant Room is the part of a pool building responsible for the circulation and filtration of water, and maintaining the water temperature and quality.

An acoustic ceiling is an essential feature of a pool hall. It reduces the high noise levels that are present in crowded spaces, as well as reverberations that are caused by splashing and other activities.

The renovation of the Indoor Pools is a key project in Council’s Long-Term Plan (LTP). Once complete, the Pools will boast of much improved facilities, including a new sauna and plunge pool, a splash pad, non-slip flooring, new changing rooms suitable for families, the elderly and those with disabilities as well as a community room. The outside area including the playground is also getting a major upgrade. You can find out more about all the changes happening at the Pools here.

The temporary pop-up pool, located at the South Waikato Sport and Events Centre in Tokoroa, will offer limited services for the community such as learn to swim classes, water safety for schools, early morning walkers and rehabilitation.
