Mayor's Review: Council Meeting 5 March 2026

Kia ora tātou,

Council had its February meeting on Thursday 5 March after the previously scheduled one on 26 February had to be rescheduled.

At the meeting, Council agreed to proceed with the 8.9% rates increase that was signalled in the Long-Term Plan, for the 2026-27 Annual Plan period. This approach means we stay the course with our strategy for the District and avoid the prospect of having to consider widespread reductions to service levels for our community.

We also approved the draft 2026-27 Fees and Charges schedule, which determine the costs associated with a range of services Council offers.

I opened the meeting with a public apology for a social media post I made earlier this year, which led to a Code of Conduct investigation that was upheld. A further Code of Conduct complaint against the Chief Executive was ruled by the independent investigator to have no basis and therefore invalid.

The continued strong financial position of Council was outlined in the Financial Service Report, which looked over the financial performance of the Council up to 31 December last year. The Capital Portfolio Report also highlighted a continued focus on improved delivery.

There was also a Notice of Motion tabled by Cr Thomas to rescind a Notice of Motion that was tabled and decided on at the last Council meeting. This was voted through by Council, and it’s crucial to note here that the motion doesn’t set out to halt the opening up of workshops, but rather to refine the scope and ensure it can be done in the best and most cost effective way.
