Dog owners out in force for Parvo Education Day

Free parvo vaccinations were administered to 70 dogs and at least 56 were microchipped free of charge, as South Waikato District Council rolled out a mega day of pooch health and education.

Held in conjunction with local vet clinic Vetora at Council headquarters in Tokoroa last Saturday, the day attracted dog owners and their furry friends from across the District.

The parvo education and free vaccinations were an especially important part of the event, following a 2024-25 summer season in which the South Waikato Animal Shelter, along with many other districts nationally, had to contend with extremely high levels of the virus.

"This initiative was a proactive step towards preparing ahead of this summer,” South Waikato District Council Compliance Manager Kerry Beckett said.

"It was great to see the community take advantage of this opportunity and display responsible dog ownership.”

In addition to the free vaccinations and microchipping, owners were offered complimentary deworming for their dogs and were able to register animals to ensure they are compliant and traceable through their microchip.

All up 27 dogs were registered on the spot, along with the creation of 19 new owner accounts.

Vetora also funded a free BBQ for attendees.

The generosity of our community shone through as well, with donations of dog food, blankets, toys and other goodies for the South Waikato Animal Shelter.
