Get ready for the local elections - Enrol Now!
The 2025 local elections are fast approaching. Now is the time to ensure your voice is heard in shaping the future of our District. Enrolment packs were posted in April, if you haven't received yours yet, it means you're not enrolled, or your details are outdated. Act now to ensure you're ready to vote.
If you're a first-time voter, enrolling is quick and straightforward. Enrolling to vote is your opportunity to influence decisions that directly impact our community - things like rates, rubbish collection, libraries, parks and public transport. By participating, you contribute to the democratic process and help elect leaders who represent your values and priorities.
You can enrol to vote in the 2025 local elections if you:
- Are 18 years or older.
- Are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
- Have lived in New Zealand for at least one year at some point in your life.
If you're 17, you can still enrol now, and you'll be automatically added to the roll when you turn 18.
Key dates to remember
- 1 August 2025: Last day to enrol or update your details for your voting pack to be mailed to you.
- 9 September 2025: Postal voting opens.
- 11 October 2025: Election Day, ensure your voting documents reach the Council by midday.
After 1 August, if you're not enrolled, you'll need to cast a special vote.
How to enrol or update your details
Enrolling or updating your details is easy:
- Online: Visit enrol.vote.nz and verify your identity using your New Zealand driver licence, passport, or RealMe verified identity.
- By Phone: Call 0800 36 76 56 to request an enrolment form.
- By Mail: Complete the form included in your enrolment update pack and return it as instructed.
If you live outside the South Waikato District but pay rates on a property here, you may be eligible to enrol as a ratepayer elector. Contact our Governance Office at governance@southwaikato.govt.nz for more information and to complete the necessary forms.
If you require help enrolling, you can ask a friend or family member to assist you. They can help complete the form online or in person at your local voting place on election day.
