South Waikato Aquatics Centre to Reopen After Major Upgrade
South Waikato District Council is gearing up to reopen the South Waikato Aquatics Centre to the public, following a 19-month long project to regenerate the 30-year-old facility.
The $17 million upgrade, which came in on budget and on time, was included as a major project in the SWDC Long Term Plan 2024-34, with work beginning in February 2025.
A memorable celebration will mark the reopening on Saturday 3 October, with regular weekly swim programmes back in action following the opening weekend.
"The project is a significant investment in the future of our District,” South Waikato Mayor Gary Petley said.
“Without this investment, we risked losing the facility for good. A patch-up-and-go approach simply wouldn’t have worked, and now we will instead have a centre that is fit for purpose for several more decades.
“We recognise how important the place has been to our community. Rangatahi have learned to swim and be active here, countless celebrations have been held, and now this redevelopment will ensure it can continue serving our community for generations to come.”
Previously known as South Waikato Indoor Pools, the facility has adopted a new name, South Waikato Aquatics Centre, to better reflect what is now on offer to visitors.
Adults will be able to relax in the wellness area featuring a sauna, spa and plunge pool, while families have space to play between the outdoor playground and splashpad. A revamp of the old community room and an additional poolside space provide great options for gatherings and celebrations.
Refreshed changing rooms, lockers, poolside seating and showers, and staff facilities also make the list of improvements. Behind the scenes, the modern filtration and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems promise efficiency, lower running costs, and higher-quality water and air.
With the countdown now on, the community can look forward to getting back in the water and making the most of a facility designed to serve South Waikato for decades to come.
More information about the grand opening, bookings, programmes and what’s new at the South Waikato Aquatics Centre will be available on the Council website and social media channels in the lead-up to reopening.
