Our pets and livestock are a large part of our lives. In an emergency ensuring their welfare is, for ​many people, very important. This page helps with some contact details.

Support and Assistance​​

  • For animal welfare advice or assistance contact the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) (Animal Welfare) 0800 00 83 33.
  • For farmer support, contact Rural Support Trust 0800 787 254 (0800 RURAL HELP).
  • If you need assistance sourcing water and supplemental feed for your livestock, contact Federated Farmers on 0800 327 646 (0800 FARMING).

Reporting lost animals

Identification may be difficult if an animal has lost its ID tag, or it has been torn off in the attempt to flee an earthquake.

  • If you find a farm animal and are not sure about its ownership, contact MPI 0800 00 83 33, or South Waikato Animal Control (07) 885 0340 A/H (07) 885 0774 or ​South Waikato SPCA (07) 886 7722.
  • If you find a pet that you do not own and it requires immediate medical attention please take it to your local veterinarian or South Waikato SPCA (07) 886 7722.
