Transformed Tokoroa Library prepares to reopen as a Community Hub

South Waikato District Council is delighted to announce Tokoroa Library will re-open its doors as a multi-purpose Community Hub on 14 September 2026.

After almost one year of extensive refurbishments to address waterproofing and structural issues, and to bring the 1990s facility into a new era, the community will be able to explore and enjoy a modern place to learn and gather.

With a new name gifted by local iwi, the reimagined space will offer a wider range of services, along with functional meeting rooms, a welcoming entrance and reception area, and modern facilities designed to better serve the community.

South Waikato Mayor Gary Petley believes the Hub provides a much-needed refreshed, welcoming space where the community can connect and access a range of services under one roof.

“This is more than a refurbished library. It is a place for our community to come together, connect and access the services they rely on,” Petley said.

“We’ve given a building that has served Tokoroa for more than 30 years a new lease on life.”

Along with a new look and feel, the Community Hub has been re-designed to meet the growing needs of the South Waikato community.

Council’s Customer Solutions Team will relocate to the Hub, making it easier for the community to access practical services. As well as borrowing books, puzzles and toys, visitors will be able to speak to Council staff, pay rates, register dogs, submit applications and access a range of programmes and events.

The $2 million refurbishment was set out in Council’s Long Term Plan 2024-2034, which aimed to remedy structural issues and modernise the 1994 building. Work to address seismic and waterproofing issues began in September 2025, providing a valuable opportunity to make improvements.

Double-glazed windows, an upgraded heating and ventilation system and multi-functional meeting spaces now offer a more comfortable and versatile space for everyone to enjoy.
