Youth Week 2026: Celebrating Young Voices in South Waikato

Supported by the South Waikato District Council’s Community Contracts scheme, Youth Week 2026 will put rangatahi at the forefront at a range of events held in the District between 18-22 May.

In line with Council’s Long Term Plan goals of getting more people to participate in the community, and getting all young people into education or employment, the events will promote positive actions about our youth, from creativity to commerce and mental and physical wellbeing.

Coordinated by Council Community Contract holders, the events will all share the overarching theme of ‘our voices matter, we deserve to be heard’.

South Waikato Mayor Gary Petley said it’s a hugely important event for the District.

“We’ve been very clear in our intent as a Council to put young voices – our future – at the forefront of our plans for the District, and events like this are a really important part of supporting that work,” Mayor Petley said.

“Our current Long Term Plan identified the issues we have in our District when it comes to the number of young people we have who aren’t currently in employment or education, and it will be rangatahi that ultimately lead the efforts to elevate the South Waikato to a better future.”

Features of particular interest this year include the introduction of a large sensory room at Thursday’s sports day, which is designed for all-abilities participation. Special needs units from local schools will be among those trying it out.

Tech will form a key part of the week – with Friday dedicated to virtual reality activities – while a youth market and creative spaces form part of the schedule.

All events are free and do not require pre-registration.
