​South Waikato voter turnout surges past national average

South Waikato residents turned out in force for the 2025 Local Elections, with 7,596 votes cast - a 45.83% turnout. This marks an increase from 42.05% in 2022 and places the District well above the national average of 39.42%.

This achievement reflects the combined efforts of Council staff, the Electoral Commission, and the wider community. From communications, executive support and customer service to property and facilities, every team played a vital role in ensuring voters were supported.

A major focus was engaging younger voters. Council staff, supported by the Electoral Commission, ran enrolment sessions at local schools and attended community events to encourage youth participation.

The 2025 Local Elections have provided valuable lessons that will strengthen Council's planning and delivery for the next local elections in 2028.
