Last chance to Stand
If you see yourself as a potential leader and are passionate about the South Waikato and our towns, then now’s your chance to give local politics a go and have a say in your community’s future.
Nominations for the upcoming local elections close at 12 noon on Friday, 1 August. Nicola Amos, Council’s Deputy Electoral Officer says anyone wishing to stand as a candidate in the South Waikato, for Mayor, Putāruru Ward, Tīrau Ward, Tokoroa Ward, or for the Tīrau Community Board should get their nominations in now.
“We encourage anyone who is interested in contributing to their community to consider standing for election,” says Amos. “So far, 19 nominations have been received, including one for the Tīrau Community Board. However, three more nominations are needed to fill all available positions. If these are not received by the deadline, the board may not be fully established following the election,” she added.
“Local government helps shape the decisions that affect our communities and gives people a way to take part in how things are run. Mayors, Councillors and Community Board Members have leadership roles and are responsible for representing the views and needs of their communities.”
“Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election, provided they are a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the electoral roll.”
What you need to stand:
- Be nominated by two people who are over 18 and enrolled to vote in the area you're standing for. You must also be enrolled.
- Agree to be nominated and pay a $200 deposit (refundable depending on the number of votes received).
- Complete the nomination form and return with a photo and profile statement either:
- In person at Council offices, or
- Via email to: governance@southwaikato.govt.nz
Voting papers will be sent out from 9-22 September and must be received by the Council before midday on Election Day, 11 October 2025.
