Welcome to Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2024 - Māori Language Week 2024
This Saturday, 14 Hepetema (September) marks the start of Te wiki o te Reo Māori 2024 – Māori Language Week 2024.
The South Waikato boasts a proud Māori representation, with census data from 2018 showing Māori make up 35.3 percent of our District’s population.
This Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, the South Waikato District Council is encouraging everyone in our community – whether a fluent te Reo speaker or a beginner – to get involved and join the effort to revitalise one of New Zealand’s official languages.
Throughout the week we’ll be sharing content across our social media channels, while different events and activities will be held throughout the week at the District’s libraries in Tīrau, Tokoroa and Putāruru, so keep an eye out on the Facebook Page here.
Members of the public are also invited to attend a kapa haka performance from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Hiringa at Tokoroa Library from 1.30pm on Rāhina (Monday), 16 September.
