SWDC Calls for Government Support for Accommodation Benefits
South Waikato District Council Advocates for Increased Government Assistance for Accommodation Benefits.
South Waikato District Council Mayor, Gary Petley, is urgently calling for more government assistance for residents on accommodation benefits in the district. The financial and psychological pressures faced by pensioners and those in social housing have reached critical levels, necessitating immediate action.
Mayor Petley highlighted, "Over the last two days, during our Long-Term Plan hearings, we have heard firsthand the pain experienced by many in our community. Pensioners and those in our social housing are particularly under immense pressure."
In response, the Council has decided to advocate strongly for a review of the Accommodation Supplements provided to eligible residents in the district. This matter was brought to the forefront at this morning’s Council meeting in Tokoroa, where the elected members unanimously agreed to support the motion.
The councillors acknowledged discrepancies in the amount of supplement people receive across the country due to zoning, and urge the government to review and adopt a more equitable and updated approach.
Mayor Petley emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "South Waikato pensioners, including those in the council’s housing, are struggling with the rising costs of living and accommodation. This is not just a local issue; it's a national concern affecting our most vulnerable people."
"There’s no doubt that all local councils across the country are facing similar challenges. I urge our fellow councils to join us in calling on the government to review the accommodation supplements provided to eligible residents across the country," concluded Mayor Petley.
The South Waikato District Council is committed to bringing this matter to the attention of the Minister of Social Development and the local Member of Parliament, Louise Upston, urging for a review of the maximum allowable assistance to support those in need.
