New basketball court added to Tokoroa Skate Park
Activity around the Tokoroa Skatepark has ramped up in recent weeks with the Tokoroa Host Lions Club volunteering their time to construct a new basketball court within the area.
The Tokoroa Lions Club has been involved in many community projects since being formed in 1962 and the new basketball court is another project the Club is delighted to be a part of.
“We’re always looking for community projects for the group to take part in,” Lions Club member Murray Scarlett said.
Mr Scarlett, who has been a Lions Club member for over 30 years, mentioned that the Club has several skilled members who all love to support community initiatives.
Often their work goes unnoticed and many people are unaware of their voluntary involvement in projects. While, they prefer to roll up their sleeves and continue to give back to their community, Council wants to ensure the Club’s involvement in this project is well known.
“There is a vast collection of expertise within our group and we’ve had a good track record over the years of being involved in projects and volunteering.”
Initial planning of the basketball court began back in December 2019 and when the country was hit with Covid-19 it delayed the start of works.
Council’s Project Manager Ejas Nazar is pleased with the progression of the skatepark and showed his appreciation for the efforts made by the Tokoroa Host Lions Club.
“The concreting of the court is now complete and we will begin concentrating on the seating area and footpath,” Mr Nazar said.
“Once finished it will be a good addition to the Tokoroa skatepark for the local community and visitors from outside the area.
“Working along with Lions Club is going great and thanks a lot for all the effort they put in to make this happening.”
There has been no official timetable set for the completion of the basketball court. We will aim to provide updates through social media on its progress and inform of an opening once near completion.
