Local government is a vital cog in the wheel of democracy. At the South Waikato District Council, we not only strive to understand the needs of the communities that we serve, but we are also the major provider of many services to our communities. It is vital for Council to be responsive to its people. It is equally vital that everybody should be able to become involved.
Council's role has two essential elements. On one hand , it is required to provide the people of the South Waikato with responsible leadership. This means that often it has to make decisions that do not suit everybody – especially when they impact on people financially. On the other hand , Council has to represent the interests of all people. This means it has to consider and be respectful of the views, preferences and desires of the local community. Its job is to balance the community's wishes and dreams with Council’s our estimation of what can be afforded.
Therefore, Council has a difficult balancing act to perform: For every service that it provides the community, and for every service that it would like to provide, Council has to make sensible decisions about how to obtain the resources that will be needed.
It is these services that you will find under “Council Services”. If at any time you need to contact us, please feel free to do so.
