Environmental Health

“…the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through organised efforts of society."

Environmental health can be defined as being “the control of all the factors in man's physical environment which have, or may have, a harmful effect on his physical development, health or survival”. Health, in this context, is said to mean “a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, not merely the absence of disease”. The health of the people is directly linked to the state of the environment. This necessitates a close relationship between Resource Consents that are in place to effectively manage the land and the health of the people who live in the District. The aim of the Environmental Health section at the South Waikato District Council is to prevent, detect and control environmental hazards which affect our health and include:

  • Liquor licensing
  • Registration of premises that could affect public health
  • Pest control
  • Hazardous substance and new organisms control
  • Noise control
  • Smoking
  • State of the environment
