Summer Reading Programme
December to January each year we run the Kiwanis Summer Reading Programme. This programme is open to 130 children aged from 4-10 that live in the South Waikato and is provided by Tokoroa, Putaruru and Tirau libraries at no charge. This programme is aimed at keeping the children reading over the summer holidays.
The programme runs for six weeks and winds up with a party and storyteller where each child receives a book and other rewards.
School Holiday Programme
Each school holidays we run the Book Treks programme. This is a reading and game based programme similar to the summer reading programme but is open to all ages.
There is a different theme each holiday, and a small reward is given for each book read.
Odyssey Teen Reading Programme
The Odyssey programme is run for six weeks over July and August. This is another reading programme but aimed at teens aged from 11-17 years. There are great prizes to be gained; the more books read the greater the prize. This programme offers a genuine challenge to the teens, and has lifted the perception of reading books from boring to a real sense of achievement. The Odyssey also gives the teens the opportunity to meet and mix with other kids with similar interests.
The Tokoroa and Putaruru libraries welcome groups into the library for visits; we are happy to work together with you, or just provide an informative tour tailored to the requirements of your group.
We are available to speak at school assemblies or individual classes, as well as your group, about the services and material the library offers.
Putaruru library provides a Toddler Tales pre-school programme of stories and crafts on Thursdays from 10.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. For more information please contact the Putaruru Library Assistant.
The Community Services Librarian at Tokoroa is available to read stories to your group; this can be organized on a casual or regular basis.
