Main Industries
Forestry and pastoral farming, particularly dairying, are the predominant activities in the District. Around a fifth of the workforce is employed in forestry and agriculture. Another 28% of the workforce is employed in manufacturing, associated with these industries.
Natural Resources
Approximately half of the District is covered by forests. There are also hydro-lakes and many streams in the District. The southern and western boundaries of the District are bounded by the Waikato River.
Recreational Opportunities
Many recreational activities are centred around the forests and water ways in the District including bush walking, hunting, fishing and mountain biking. There is also a strong network of clubs providing many opportunities from sports to theatre.
Facilities
The District Council manages a range of leisure facilities including a District library service, heated and cold water swimming pool complexes and 240 hectares of parks and reserves.
Business Opportunities
The district has a labour force with skills as diverse as the many nationalities that make up the relatively stable population. Half of the population of New Zealand live within a 200 kilometre radius of the District. The infrastructure of road and rail services is in place to get goods to that
