November/December 2006
The Local Government Act 2002 requires all councils to consult with their local communities to identify Community Outcomes and priorities. Community Outcomes are statements of what communities want to achieve, now and in the future. Their purpose is to provide guidance to local groups and organisations.
The inaugural Draft State of the District Report – South Waikato’s Sustainability Indicators – was launched at a South Waikato Needs Summit in November 2006. The Draft Report shows that most of South Waikato's Sustainability Indicators improved between the mid-1990s and early 2000s, but the District is still lagging behind the national average on many aspects of social and economic wellbeing.
Many of the key needs in the District relate to youth issues, including youth transitions from school to work and training, addressing our high rate of student stand-downs and suspensions, reducing our rate of teen parenthood, increasing our levels of educational attainment, and enabling better youth engagement in community activities.
